Richard Bona: bass and vocals
Alfredo Rodriguez: piano and voice
Michael Oliveira: drums
Richard Bona and Alfredo Rodriguez enjoyed each other’s talents for the first time through mutual mentor Quincy Jones. After years of friendship, the duo collaborated for the first time on the album Rodriguez Tocororo, produced by Quincy Jones. In the album, they recorded two songs together, Raíces (Roots) and Ay, Mamá Inés that show how their unique musical backgrounds can unite in a cohesive way to create stimulating sounds.
After meeting Quincy Jones at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006, Alfredo left Cuba and his family to emigrate to the United States to pursue his dream. Educated in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana, his art is influenced as much by Bach and Stravinsky as by his Afro-Cuban roots and jazz. Over the past decade, Rodriguez has evolved from a young Cuban artist to a world-renowned Grammy candidate.
Originally from a small town in Cameroon, Richard Bona was fascinated by the great American bassist Jaco Pastorius at an early age. Pastorius inspired him to pick up the instrument and, years later, Bona would become one of the most acclaimed bass players in the world. After winning his first Grammy in 2002, his fourth studio album Tiki was nominated for “Best Contemporary World Music Album” at the 49 Grammy Awards. He has dedicated over 30 years of his career to promoting peace, happiness and unity through his music, and he is currently fulfilling his promise to visit every country in the world.
The duo can now be seen together in the Grammy Quincy-winning Netflix documentary.
